On low-volume, high-reliability products it often comes out ahead; on a cost-driven consumer product it usually does not.

Rigid

Flexible

Rigid-flex

Base material

FR-4 glass-epoxy (or CEM-1/3, FR-1)

Polyimide film

FR-4 rigid sections + polyimide flex sections

Conductor

Electrodeposited copper

Rolled-annealed copper

RA copper in flex zones, ED copper on rigid zones

Thickness

0.8–3.2 mm

0.1–0.5 mm

0.8–2.0 mm overall

Bend capability

None

Yes — What are the three main types of PCB?

The three main types of PCB by construction are single-sided, double-sided, and multilayer. Single-sided boards have copper on one face only, double-sided boards have copper on both faces joined by plated through-holes, and multilayer boards laminate three or more conductive layers, usually with dedicated power and ground planes.

2. What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided PCB?

A single-sided PCB has one conductive layer, so traces cannot cross and the layout must route around obstacles or use jumpers. A double-sided PCB has two conductive layers connected by plated through-holes, which doubles the routing area and allows a ground pour on the reverse side. Double-sided boards dominate general-purpose electronics because the extra capability costs far less than moving to multilayer.

3. Is a 4-layer PCB always better than a 2-layer PCB?

No. A 4-layer board is better when the design needs controlled impedance, a clean reference plane under high-speed nets, or more power distribution than a two-layer pour can supply. For a low-speed, moderate-density design, a well-routed double-sided board is usually cheaper, faster to build, and easier to rework. Extra layers that end up as poor planes can make signal integrity worse, not better.

4. What is the difference between rigid, flexible, and rigid-flex PCBs?

Rigid PCBs are built on a stiff FR-4 substrate and hold their shape. Flexible PCBs are built on thin polyimide film with rolled-annealed copper and can bend or fold. Rigid-flex PCBs laminate rigid and flexible sections into a single board, so mounting hardware and a folding tail coexist. The choice is mechanical more than electrical: it depends on whether the board has to move inside the enclosure.

5. Why do some websites list twenty types of PCB?

Because they mix three different things into one list: the layer construction, the substrate class, and properties that are not types at all — surface finish, copper weight, laminate grade, mask colour, or compliance. What is a metal-core PCB and what is it used for?

A metal-core PCB, also called an MCPCB or insulated metal substrate, replaces the FR-4 base with aluminium or copper and bonds the copper foil to it through a thin thermally conductive dielectric. It is used where heat removal dominates the design: LED lighting, power supplies, and power electronics. The dielectric layer, not the metal base, sets the effective thermal conductivity, commonly 1–4 W/m·K.

7. What is an HDI PCB?

An HDI (high-density interconnect) PCB is a multilayer board built with microvias, finer trace and space, and thinner dielectric layers than standard construction, so more function fits in less area with better signal performance. It is a density class of multilayer board rather than a separate substrate family.

8. How many layers can a PCB have?

Commercially, multilayer boards are routinely built from 4 to 20-plus layers, and mainstream motherboards sit at 4 to 8. Consumer mobile products often use 8 to 12 or more in an HDI stack-up. Layer counts above roughly 20 are uncommon outside specialist backplanes and computing hardware, because each added layer pair raises cost and reduces yield.

9. What is the most common PCB type?

The most common printed circuit board is the rigid FR-4 board, either double-sided or 4-layer, because it covers the widest range of products at a cost that volume manufacturing can support. Single-sided rigid boards are the most common in very high-volume, cost-sensitive products, and aluminium MCPCBs dominate illumination-grade LED lighting.

10.
