at different speeds: one-time engineering cost, which collapses fastest and approaches zero per board; component purchase tiers, which step down at fixed quantity breakpoints; and line efficiency and yield, which improves slowly at roughly 10–20% per doubling of cumulative output. The price stops falling when what remains is the material you cannot avoid — the BOM, the laminate, the solder paste. On a typical 200-component, four-layer board, roughly 70–80% of the total available reduction is already captured by about 1,000 to 2,500 units. Past that point, each further doubling of order quantity typically buys single-digit percent.

Ask for a quote at 100 pieces, then ask again at 1,000. The industry explains volume pricing with a list — NRE, components, efficiency — and stops there.
